Vaporizzare asteroidi
La tecnologia per vaporizzare asteroidi di piccola e media grandezza esiste già. Il progetto DE-STAR, o Directed Energy Solar Targeting of Asteroids sviluppato dai fisici Philip M. Lubin e Gary B. Hughes, promette di sventare la minaccia di comete e asteroidi potenzialmente pericolosi per la Terra utilizzando satelliti e specchi per sfruttare l'energia solare convogliando la in un raggio laser.
"This system is not some far-out idea from Star Trek," says co-developer Gary Hughes, a researcher and professor from California Polytechnic State University. "All the components of this system pretty much exist today. Maybe not quite at the scale that we'd need--scaling up would be the challenge--but the basic elements are all there and ready to go."
