Il presidente del Consiglio Mario Monti è la nuova star a Washington.

Mario Monti is a darling of the international stage, viewed widely as a tough economist who just might be capable of instilling the global confidence that Italy needs to help pull it out of its financial crisis. What's more, Mr. Monti is, by all accounts, a staid European bureaucrat who appears to have no skeletons in the closet.

Washington is welcoming him with open arms. Italian officials have been fending off requests from the media and the diplomatic circuit, all looking for a piece of Mr. Monti. The hottest ticket in town this week is a dinner with the new prime minister planned for Thursday night at the glittering Villa Firenze, home to the Italian ambassador.
