Waymo, la casa automobilistica di Google

Geek   14.12.16

Waymo è la nuova società di Alphabet che si occuperà di sviluppare la tecnologia di guida autonoma.

Waymo stands for a new way forward in mobility. We started as the Google self-driving car project in 2009 and we are now an independent self-driving technology company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things move around. In 2015, we invited Steve Mahan, former CEO of the Santa Clara Valley Blind Center, for a special ride. Steve had ridden in our cars in the past—first accompanied by a test driver in 2012 and then on a closed course in 2013. This time was different. Steve experienced the world’s first fully self-driving ride on public roads, navigating through everyday traffic with no steering wheel, no pedals, and no test driver.

L'alfabeto a partire dalla G

What is Alphabet? Alphabet is mostly a collection of companies. The largest of which, of course, is Google. This newer Google is a bit slimmed down, with the companies that are pretty far afield of our main Internet products contained in Alphabet instead. What do we mean by far afield? Good examples are our health efforts: Life Sciences (that works on the glucose-sensing contact lens), and Calico (focused on longevity). Fundamentally, we believe this allows us more management scale, as we can run things independently that aren't very related.

I want Google to strive to do that -- not just build technology for certain segments. For me, it matters that we drive technology as an equalizing force, as an enabler for everyone around the world.
Which is why I do want Google to see, push, and invest more in making sure computing is more accessible, connectivity is more accessible. And going back to our core mission, when we do things like machine learning and assist users, I view that as a huge game changer. Because over time, someone who has [access to] just a smartphone hopefully has... the same [capabilities] as someone who is more privileged. That's what's very exciting about what we are doing.

Alphabet prenderà anche il posto di Google Inc. al NASDAQ, ma il simbolo azionario resterà $GOOG; non affannatevi ad aggiornare l'app Borsa.
