Ann Friedman ha raccolto un'antologia sulla nonfiction americana.
56 articoli, uno per ogni anno tra il 1960 e il 2016, scritti da 56 giornaliste.

I found them — one for each of the past 56 years. And I was ashamed. Despite the fact that I graduated from journalism school, own several nonfiction anthologies, and am an avid reader of magazines, this was the first time I read much of their work. It was the first time I’d even seen many of their names. The male bylines I scrolled past in decades-old tables of contents were familiar, either because those men are still working their prestigious jobs today, or because they have been anthologized. Most of the women nonfiction writers of previous eras, I discovered after some Googling, had short-lived journalistic careers. And the excellent work they did produce has escaped every curator of the past several decades. We simply haven’t remembered them. And it's time we start.

Il principale quotidiano italiano infila teorie complottiste un tanto al chilo nel più classico dei classici boxini morbosi in quattrodici comode foto: la morte di Marcy Borders, meglio conosciuta come dusty lady, diventata suo malgrado famosa per essere stata fotografata ricoperta di polvere e detriti dopo il crollo delle Twin Tower durante l'attentato dell'11 settembre 2001.

Perché le vignette di Giannelli continuano a campeggiare quotidianamente sul corrierone? Qual è il motivo di tanta ostinazione? Perché spesso non fanno ridere? E perché, altre volte, se c'è una battuta non riusciamo a intuirla?

Grantland racconta la storia di coraggio e determinazione che portò la giornalista del New York World (giornale diretto da Joseph Pulitzer) Nellie Bly a viaggiare intorno al mondo nel tempo record di appena 72 giorni, 6 ore e 11 minuti.
Era il 1889. 16 anni dopo l'uscita dell'iconico romanzo di Jules Verne, Il giro del mondo in 80 giorni.

In 1888, she went to her bosses at the New York World, Joseph Pulitzer's paper, where she had talked her way into a job the previous year, and told them she wanted to circumnavigate the earth. Her idea was to try to beat the time of Phileas Fogg, the hero of Jules Verne's massively popular 1873 novel Around the World in Eighty Days. She'd send dispatches back to the paper, make an adventure out of it. Her editor was in favor, but the World's business manager -- who liked the concept -- wanted to send a man.
"It is impossible for you to do it," he told her. "You are a woman and would need a protector." Even if she could travel alone, he said, she’d want to take too much baggage. "There is no use talking about it," he insisted. "No one but a man could do this."

"Very well," she said. "Start the man, and I'll start the same day for some other newspaper and beat him."

She was 24 when she said this. The next year, a few months after her 25th birthday, the paper said yes, and she set sail.

She brought one suitcase.

Credo che sarebbe opportuno, per le maggiori testate europee (carta stampata e tv), investire in un giornalismo europeo. In ogni paese l'informazione dovrebbe essere accompagnata da un’edizione meno "locale". Chi abita in Italia, in Francia o in Germania legge sui propri quotidiani o vede nei telegiornali notizie che riguardano solo la politica interna, la cronaca e le crisi (ad ognuno la propria), come se ad ogni popolo interessasse solo quel che avviene in casa sua. Occorre far entrare nella testa della gente che non siamo più in Italia, ma in Europa, e che quindi ogni scelta e decisione non deve essere presa a vantaggio o a danno di questo o quel paese, ma per la crescita di un'unica politica sociale, economica, fiscale.
